SPI recently hosted and engaged the research teams from De La Salle University’s Center for Engineering and Sustainable Development, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), and the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) to explore potential collaborations on various innovative environmental solutions.
The discussions focused on two key research initiatives:
- Recovery of Rare Earth Elements and Eco-Effective Filling Material for Phosphogypsum Repurposing with Carbon Sequestration Potential; and
- Hydrometallurgical Strategies for Bench-Scale Extraction of Critical Rare Earth and Strategic Elements from Philippine Coal Fly Ash and Other Environmental Applications
As a key player in the energy sector, SPI supports these initiatives as part of its commitment to sustainability and the circular economy, helping develop solutions that minimize environmental impact, reduce carbon emissions, and contribute to global climate change mitigation.

SPI has also been instrumental in the successful research on geopolymer technology, an eco-friendly cement alternative derived from aluminosilicate-rich precursor materials such as coal ash and other mineral residues.
Led by Filipino scientist Dr. Michael Promentilla, this project aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the construction industry. With commercialization studies underway, Dr. Promentilla acknowledged SPI’s vital role in advancing this research.
