SPI Reaffirms Support for Villanueva’s Emerging Silk Industry

SPI reaffirms its support for the Villanueva Silk Project, a strategic initiative led by the Local Government of Villanueva in partnership with the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI). More than just backing silk weaving, SPI is also supporting key components of the silk value chain—including the cultivation of mulberry trees through the Villanueva Urban Forestry Project and the rearing of silkworms for raw silk production.

The project is aligned with Villanueva’s long-term vision to become a key hub for silk production in Mindanao, promoting sustainable livelihoods, cultural heritage, and economic inclusion. Among the project’s community partners is the VK Women’s Cooperative, whose members have been trained and empowered as skilled silk weavers.

This collaboration reflects SPI’s broader commitment to inclusive and sustainable community development. By supporting local enterprises and nurturing grassroots capacity, SPI helps build resilient, self-sustaining economies in its host communities.

As part of its continuing engagement, SPI President and CEO Dirk Sohns recently visited the project site to meet with local leaders, partners, and community beneficiaries. His visit underscored SPI’s appreciation for the collective efforts driving the project forward.

SPI extends its heartfelt thanks to LGU Villanueva and PTRI for their unwavering dedication to advancing the Philippine silk industry. Together, we are weaving not just silk, but a future rooted in partnership, purpose, and progress.
