SPI’s Mapawa Carbon Sink Project was recently featured as one of the benchmark Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) programs on climate resilience during Xavier University’s 2025 Social Development Week.
As part of the Service-Learning Summit 2025, the event highlighted various student-led engagements that align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We are honored that our Carbon Sink Project was recognized as a key initiative contributing to climate action and sustainability.
In partnership with E. Pelaez Ranch Inc. (EPRI) and the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) Region 10, the 1,200-hectare reforestation project in Cugman, Cagayan de Oro City, stands as the first and largest private-led initiative of its kind in the region. With a goal to restore 1.2 million trees by 2031, this project underscores our commitment to environmental sustainability, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. By rehabilitating degraded lands, the initiative not only helps offset carbon emissions but also strengthens the local ecosystem and promotes long-term climate resilience.
As we continue our sustainability journey, we look forward to deepening our collaboration with Xavier University and inspiring more young leaders to become advocates for environmental preservation and sustainability. Through collective action and strong partnerships, we can make a lasting impact in fostering a greener and more resilient future.
