SPI’s 1,200-hectare carbon sink project in Mapawa is among those cited as one of the model environmental conservation and restoration initiatives that contribute to the protection of the Cagayan de Oro river basin.
CDO River Basin Management Council Chair and Cagayan de Oro Archbishop Antonio Ledesma calls for greater collaboration and support by all sectors of society to at least achieve the critical minimum in environmental restoration efforts that could make an impact on two urgent priorities: reducing disaster risk (to flooding and erosion) and potable water supply security.
The ongoing afforestation efforts in Mapawa is SPI’s concrete expression of support to the environmental protection initiatives as the company stays committed to bringing 1.2 million trees back to the forest by 2031.
COMREL Manager Ghaye Alegrio received the citation on behalf of SPI during the “greening pinning” ceremony at the Grand Caprice Restaurant on 2 September 2019 from Archbishop Antonio Ledesma and Charlotte Floors of the Dutch national committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
